- Leaves don’t stay crisp for long. There is a limited window before they become mushy and lose their colour
9 photos to tell the story.
It’s ‘blowing a gale’ here at the moment. We took our life in our hands walking this morning. There is debris everywhere, so I thought that ‘leaves’ was a good topic for the day.
- This sign leads to our favourite laneway. The leaves pile up high in Autumn, and the dogs love to run through them.
- This photo was taken two years ago. The conditions were just right. No wind, and no rain. Last year we missed out on seeing this amazing display due to a storm which blew them away. Fingers crossed for this year although today was not a good start. Very strong winds are blowing stuff everywhere. I have not messed with the colour, this is exactly what it looked like.
- I was very lucky to get this shot. It rained later that day and washed the leaves off the car. A very still day and a slightly damp car allowed me to get this shot while walking the dogs.
- I thought I had lost this photo when my hard drive died a few years back. I lost about 5 years worth of photos, but fortunately, I had put the first few years onto DVDs. They went missing until we were helping my son to pack after he moved in with his lady. His room used to be my office ‘back in the day’, and the discs were in with his. That’s my lady in the shot. She is tiny, so she makes everything look a little bigger than it is. This was taken at the Grant Burge Winery in South Australia.
- This has happened twice over the last couple of years. I go to an appointment, and I come out, and there is a single leaf on my car. It’s almost like someone is trying to tell me something.
- This is another one of those shots that I thought were gone forever. We were at a Christmas breakup party in a very old part of Melbourne. I brought my camera to get some shots, and I could see our car out of the first-floor window. I love the dappled light of the late afternoon.
- I drive past this beautiful tree every time I leave our house. It has an almost mystical effect on me. It has been in our garden for a very long time.
- This is the same tree from the previous shot, but it’s a lot further into Autumn. The Blackbird in the shot was taking a quiet moment, so I was able to get a few shots. We called him Whitey because he had one white feather. We watched him grow up and then have his own family. Blackbirds can live for more than twenty years, but Whitey only made it to four. We have a lot of cats in our area, and the owners do not realise how much damage they do.
Wonderful pictures, nice they not were lost forever. 🙂

Great pictures. I love the one with the leaves on the white car – they look like little stars 🙂
I back up all my pictures on Flickr as well as my external hard drive just in case…

Thank you and yes, I too learned my lesson. My back up drive sounds a bit like an egg beater so I think it is time to back up the back up.

Love the little lady shot. I`m guessing she makes you look bigger too! Yes, the leaves on the car shot is really interesting. What sharply pointed maples you have there. Or maybe they`re like that everywhere and the background there just defines them better.

Yes I come in at just under 6 feet and she is 4′ 10 and 3/4″ so I look quite tall when we stand together! I was lucky with the white car shot, wasn’t I?

Great photos, lovely post. The leaves on the cars look like stars. Does a lone star mean anything to you re interpreting your message??? : )))

You said someone was leaving you a message on your car – the leaf..? I said it looks like a lone star – does this strike a chord with you..? If not, just ignore me!! Just trying to be helpful – obviously not helpful!! : ))

Great photos. I love them all, but particulalry the second one. The colors just stand out so vividly and make you sit back and sigh with contentment. Does make me wonder what the dog has spotted out of shot… 😉
I’m finding I’m looking at photos more and more. Time to learn from the lessons here and go and google ‘online storage for photos’ methinks.
Hope the wind hasn’t left too much damage in its wake. Seems to be a more common occurrence these days…

Wind blew hard all day. Tree down not far from us but power stayed on here. Had fun while walking dogs as the power (all the power) was out in the town near us. Peak hour traffic and no traffic lights to cross the road. A very brave young man confidently stepped out into traffic and stopped all the cars in both directions! About seven of us scurried across the road. It was a bit like Moses and the Red Sea. Shows what a bit of confidence will do. I got a bit of a taste of my future….young man helps old bloke cross the street! It was quite surreal. My dogs were very impressed.
Flicka costs but it’s not a bad way to store photos.
Hard drives are very cheap these days. Run one as a back up to your main machine with a bit of cloud storage for your best stuff and you should be fine.
It’s dark and it’s raining at the moment which is quite cosy. Dogs are stuffed as they have been to the groomers today and the missus is knitting something……… all’s right with the world.
Thanks for the comment.
P.S. The photo you mentioned…….. it only lasted for a few days and it was extra special because you could not see it until you were right on it. You came around a bend and there it was.

Beautiful. And I agree with you about songbirds and cats. People don’t realize the damage to our wonderful birds.

There was a time , not that long ago when our local council was considering a ban on cat within a kilometre of the National Park. We have a very rare bird in the forrest near us called a Lyre Bird. They are easy prey for cats. The council got a lot of support. Unfortunately all the progress that was made (cats had to be kept inside at night) has been swept away when they reorganised the council and it’s boundaries a few years back. I’m sick of finding dead birds.

I always saved the single leaves that fell on me or on my lap (mostly while on a rickshaw in my university campus) Those leaves felt like a blessing…

There is something special about an Autumn leaf landing on you, I agree.
I love the image of you in a rickshaw with leaves all over you.

I find it interesting that this shot has been singled out a few times.
It is not one of my best shots but the subject matter is striking.
Also, it is most unlikely to be repeated as this bloke sold this car and now there is a large 4 wheel drive in it’s place and he recently rebuilt his garage so he does not park under that tree very often.
Just goes to show that you gotta get the shot because it may not come around again.

Thank you very much for your kind comments, Sally. There is something about this time of the year and it helps that we live in a part of Melbourne that has heaps of European trees. As I’m typing this I can see leaves falling outside my window, and the sun is out…………. and the birds are singing! Feeling very privileged.
